As I write this, my State of Washington enters a heightened level of social isolating in order to keep the Coronavirus outbreak at a dull roar. Millions of people are sequestered in their homes, schools are closed, businesses are shuttered, hospitals are anticipating an onslaught of virus victims.

Now, more than ever, it is important to make your bed. Yes, make your bed. When you rise from it in the morning (unless you are quite ill, please get out of bed), tidy up your bed. Straighten the sheets, shake out the duvet, plump the pillows. Arrange that stuffed animal in a perfect position. And enjoy the sense of accomplishment, because you just announced to yourself that your day has begun.

Many years ago, my grandmother taught me to make my bed every day. She told me, “Kelley, even if you do nothing much for the entire day, you will have done that, and you will feel good about yourself.” She told me many things that were true, but that particular lesson has endured for over fifty years. Because of her loving suggestion, not only do I make my bed shortly after rising, I always look down upon it and smile, feeling good about myself.

Some other amazing humans have also recommended that you make your bed. Admiral William H. McRaven said, “If you can't do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made — and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” You can watch his entire inspiring speech here.

Now, if making your bed every morning will start your day with a sense of pride and motivate you to continue to make your day worth living, can you imagine how it will help during times of stress and uncertainty? You can be like me, make your bed, look at that accomplishment and feel good about yourself.

And, if you have trouble motivating yourself to make your bed or even get out of bed, Hypnosis Helps! Call me.
